Christmas Candles

Jolly Christmas candles
Twinkling on the tree,
Lighting children’s faces
With their dreams of things to be.

Slender, solemn tapers
Spreading altar light,
Burning in the churches
On this holy Christmas night.

Flickering, stubby candles
Bravely struggling on,
Trying to convince the world
That goodness isn’t gone.

Candles stand for Christmas –
Christmas stands for light –
All their waxen wonder spent
In blotting evil’s night.

Christ is this world’s candle
Sent so long ago;
May we through the centuries
Keep His light aglow!
