Sad Memories

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” ~ Psalm 116:15

This day, December 17, 1958 was a very devastating day for me as a 9-year-old. I learned, at school, that my grandmother Dick had died following another stroke. For several years to come, most Christmas songs contained a sad reminder of that day. Those who have experienced a death at Christmas time know this sadness.

As I grew older, however, I came to understand that my grandmother had “stepped” into her heavenly home.

One song that helped me to “step out” of my grief was a selection played at her funeral, Fairest Lord Jesus. As I meditated on its words, “Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer, than all the angels heaven can boast,” I realized my young heart would know joy again at Christmas.

Dear Lord, Help us to be especially supportive of those who experience family deaths at Christmas.
